Heavy Snow and Hypothermia Risk Expected in Montana's Glacier National Park

A late-season winter storm is forecasted to bring significant snowfall and strong winds to parts of Montana, particularly Glacier National Park and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected, with the heaviest snowfall occurring above 5,000 to 5,500 feet.
Wind gusts could reach 50 to 60 mph, creating hazardous conditions such as reduced visibility, falling branches, and slushy roads.

Why It's Important?

The storm is expected to primarily affect higher elevations, where wet, heavy snow and strong winds will create dangerous travel and outdoor conditions. Hypothermia is a significant concern for those exposed to the elements, as wet snow and wind can rapidly strip body heat. Travel through mountain passes, such as Logan and Marias Passes, may become treacherous due to slushy roads, reduced visibility, and potential debris from falling branches. While lower elevations may see less snow accumulation, slippery conditions could still disrupt travel and outdoor activities.
